Last month, Bad Robot pulled off a stunt that’s all but impossible in the age of the internet by unveiling a completely unexpected trailer for10 Cloverfield Lane, the long-awaited “blood relative” semi-sequel to the found-footage monster movie that fans had all but given up on.10 Cloverfield Lanepromises to be a very different movie from it’s predecessor, not only in format – which has abandoned the found footage aspect – but in content.
Previously known by its working titleValencia, the secret Bad Robot movie directed byDan Trachtenbergcenters on three strangers, played byMary Elizabeth Winstead,John Goodman, andJohn Gallagher Jr.(The Newsroom), who are trapped together in a bunker following an unknown cataclysmic event. The first trailer indicated that monsters would play a much more passive role in10 Cloverfield Lane, leaving fans to wonder if the long-awaited follow-up would justify the long wait. The Super Bowl spot looks to be aimed at alleviating those fears, offering a few more glimpses outside the confines of the bunker, and serving up a hell of a final image. Here’s hoping it’s not the final shot of the film.

When the project was officially announced,J.J. Abramsoffered a brief explanation by way of thisexclusive comment,
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative ofCloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

Whatever questions remain, we won’t have to wait too long to learn the answers as10 Cloverfield Lanearrives in theaters March 11.
