One of the most recognizable images of theAssassin’s Creedvideo games is the image ofthe dead drop: a hooded Desmond Miles extends his arms, mimicking the sign of the cross, as he falls from a fatal height.Michael Fassbender, star of the upcoming film adaptation, makes this pose numerous times throughout the marketing campaign, and we see it in action in the new clip.
Whilethe latest traileroffered up much more footage, including the coveted Apple of Eden artifact, the standalone clips have focused primarily on the action. First it wasthe Animus introduction, thenan intense carriage chaseto save a child, and now it’s Fassbender’s Callum Lynch channeling the memories of his 15th century ancestor, Aguilar, as he escapes from pursuing attackers. It all ends withMarion Cotillardshouting “jump” before he makes the leap.

Callum is a new character to theAssassin’s Creeddogma, but the premise stays the same. Assassins and Templars are still at each other’s throats, while Callum uses high-tech equipment to tap into the memories of anincrediblydistant ancestor. As we heard in the trailers, the Templars are looking for the Apple of Eden, which they hope will end all rebellions, and they believe Callum is the key to finding it.
Justin Kurzel, who helmed both Fassbender and Cotillard inMacbeth, directsAssassin’s Creed, which also featuresJeremy Irons,Brendan Gleeson,Michael K. Williams, andAriane Labed— the latter is spotted in the clip as the female assassin.
Though there was some initial hype when the film was initially announced,Assassin’s Creedseemed to drop on the collective radar, even as we approached the release date. Now, with the film scheduled to open in theaters on December 21, the marketing has ramped up. But the big question remains, will it be drowned out byRogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is poised to claim the No. 1 box office spot the week before?
