Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars have clapped back against a report putting downRyan Coogler’s new original horror movie,Sinners. The film opened with$63 million at the global box office, including $48 million from domestic earnings and $15 million from international markets. The film was produced for a reported budget of $90 million, meaning it still needs around $180 million to break even. Still,a $63 million start is outstanding for an original horror moviewith suchstrong reviews. However, Variety’s box office story forSinners’ opening weekend performance took a negative angle, citing“a $90 million price tag before global marketing expenses”that leaves“profitability a ways away.”This ledBen StillerandPatrick Schwarzeneggerto respond in social media posts, which can be found below.
Sinnerscurrently sits at scores of 98% from critics and 97% from audiences onRotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated movie of the year. The original horror film marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler and leading starMichael B. Jordan, who first worked together onFruitvale Station, the R-rated true crime drama that also starsOctavia SpencerandKevin Durand. This came only two years before they reunited onCreed, the legacy sequel toSylvester Stallone’sRockymovies that stars Jordan as Adonis Creed, son of the legendary Apollo. Coogler then spent several years entrenched in the Marvel universe with his work onBlack Pantherand the sequel,Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and while Jordan’s role in the sequel was small, it was enough to keep their streak alive. It’s unclear what Coogler’s next feature project will be, but it will likely feature Jordan in some capacity.
