Greg Berlantimay be the uber-producer behind the CW seriesThe Flash,Arrow,DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and nowSupergirl, but you’d be forgiven for mistaking the man himself for a superhero. The guy somehow finds the time to executive produce and sometimes write these CW-verse series, and in the midst of all that, he’s also readying a feature adaptation of the DC comicBooster Gold. That superhero story revolves around a cocky, glory-seeking man from the future who uses his knowledge of future events and advanced technology to perform heroic stunts of his own, and if that sounds like an odd fit for the DC Extended Universe, it appears Warner Bros. feels much the same.
In an interview withVulture, Berlanti revealed that theBooster Goldmovie—which he’s co-writing withZack Stentz(X-Men: First Class) with an eye to direct—is not currently being envisioned as part of the DC Extended Universe:
“As of right now we have no connective tissue to those worlds. It’d be a separate thing.”
Indeed,Booster Goldsounds like a bit of an odd fit with the world ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeandSuicide Squad, and since Warner Bros. already has plans forWonder Woman,The Flash,Aquaman,Justice League, and a newBatmanmovie on tap, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of room for a character like Booster Gold at the moment.
The idea for the film was actually borne out of a TV series that Berlanti cooked up with fellow CW-verse creatorAndrew Kreisberg, but when the show failed to get off the ground, talks with newly installed DC Films Chief and DC Comics CCOGeoff Johnsresulted in the idea for a fully fledgedBooster Goldmovie. The film is still likely a ways off as it’s still in the scripting stage, and Berlanti isn’t even officially attached as a director yet, but it would be mighty interesting to see Warner Bros. release a DC film that’s not part of its established (and heavily invested) universe.
But before Berlanti gets around to possibly directingBooster Gold, he’s readying a directorial effort of a different sort. PerTHR, he has signed on to helm an adaptation of theBecky AlbertalliYA bestsellerSimon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agendafor producersWyck GodfreyandMarty Bowenof Temple Hill, the same studio that helped produceThe Fault in Our StarsandThe Maze Runner.
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiensis a coming of age story that revolves around a high school junior named Simon whose sexual-orientation secret becomes a topic of discussion around the school, leading Simon to try and navigate a way around coming out to his friends and family without feeling forced to make the admission.
An early 2017 production start-date is being eyed for the feature, which is a departure from Berlanti’s TV content but not too different from his previous feature efforts, which include 2000’sThe Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedyand the 2010Katherine HeiglcomedyLife as We Know It.
With all this on the docket, I again remain unconvinced Berlanti isn’t hiding some sort of superpower.
