What Is ‘The Holiday’?

The 2006 romantic comedyThe Holidaybecame somewhat of an instant cozy classic among fans of Nancy Meyers' work. Meyers is responsible for other films such asSomething’s Gotta Give,The Parent Trap, Father of The Bride, The Intern, and more, all films that feature quiet intimate moments among the bigger, oftentimes swoon-worthy, feel-good plot. The Holiday made roughly $200 million at the global box office back in 2006. The film takes four people, Iris (Winslet), Amanda (Diaz), Graham (Law), and Miles (Black), all at various stages ofa hot mess, express in their own livesas their lives intersect at Christmas. Iris and Amanda, both dealing with heartbreak in their own vastly different ways, swap houses in LA and Surrey, England, respectively, through Christmas. In England,Amanda meets Iris' brother Graham and unexpectedly falls in love.Iris and Miles' story is quieter, asIris begins to realize what she wants for herselfapart from a dependency on Jasper, a man she works with who becomes engaged to someone else.

Though the film is full of dual swoon-worthy romances, the growth both Amanda and Iris have as individuals is moving.Amanda learns to slow her life down, let in messy and complicated feelings, while Iris learns to grab life with both hands and stops letting life happen to her. While the film only sports a51% Critic’s Score on Rotten Tomatoes, the 81% Audience Score shows that it remains a fan-favorite holiday after holiday.
