While most of the focus has been placed on Captain America, Iron Man, Bucky Barnes, and even Black Panther and Spider-Man inCaptain America: Civil War, we should apparently be keeping an eye on War Machine.Don Cheadlereprises his role of Rhodey after we last saw him joining a new line-up of Avengers at the end ofAge of Ultron. According to the actor, what happens to Tony Stark’s buddy will be pivotal to the events to come.
Cheadle spoke withSuperHeroHypewhile making the press rounds forMiles Aheadat the Sundance Film Festival, and he teased the fate of his character.
I never know what it’s going to be and they keep their cards very close to their breast with Marvel. I never know where the character’s going to go, but he’s become more and more and in the next one, you’ll see that what happens to Rhodey is a little bit more intense and pivotal to what happens in the rest of the stories.
On one hand, he’s not saying all that much. Rhodey’s involvement becoming more intense inCivil Warcould mean anything since he didn’t have that large of a role to play inAvengers: Age of Ultron. When you factor in all that’s going on —Iron Man vs. Cap, the introduction ofBlack PantherandSpider-Maninto the MCU,Elizabeth Olsenteasing Scarlet Witch as the“wild card”of the film, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross introducing the Avengers to The Sokovia Accords — just how pivotal could War Machine actually be?
On the other hand, fans saw a glimpse of War Machine’s fate in the first trailer forCivil War. The scene in question featured Stark holding up Rhodey’s seemingly unconscious body in an open field while smoke could be seen from a distance. We know there’s going to be a big showdown between superheroes at an airport, and this could very well be the tail end of that battle. Could something happen to War Machine that would drastically effect someone like Stark moving forward?
