Captain Marvelis off to a stellar start at the box office. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female-led superhero movie pulled in $20.7 million in Thursday night previews domestically, landing as the 5th biggest preview gross for an MCU movie thus far. That puts it ahead of the Thursday grosses for films likeGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2($17 million),Spider-Man: Homecoming($15.4 million),Thor: Ragnarok($14.5 million), and behind onlyAvengers: Age of Ultron,Avengers: Infinity War,Black Panther, andCaptain America: Civil War.

The film began rolling out in international territories on Wednesday, where it’s already amassed $44 million. It debuts in China today, and early estimates indicate an opening day of around $34 million in that lucrative market, which would be the second-highest MCU opening day in China behind justAvengers: Infinity War.

Despite the efforts ofa small group of angry and misogynistic trolls,Captain Marvellooks to be a serious box office force to be reckoned with, as estimates have it opening as high as $140 million or $150 million. It’ll be interesting to see how high this thing soars given the performance of Best Picture nomineeBlack Pantherlast February, although it’s worth noting that critical reception to that film was a bit more enthusiastic than the early reviews forCaptain Marvel. Whether that impacts box office remains to be seen, as audience members are the final arbiter in that regard.`
