Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the new live-action Winnie the Pooh movieChristopher Robin. While not a remake per se, this movie is very much in line with Disney’s smash hit updates likeBeauty and the Beast,The Jungle Book, andCinderellaas it brings a new iteration of the Winnie the Pooh story to the big screen.

Finding NeverlandandQuantum of SolacefilmmakerMarc Forsterdirects this new tale, which starsEwan McGregoras the grown up iteration of the titular character who has “lost his way.” Now it’s up to his childhood friends to help him remember his past, loving self as Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and others venture into our world. This project actually originated with acclaimed indie filmmakerAlex Ross Perrywriting and directing, but he departed the director’s chair and the screenplay is now credited to Perry andAllison Schroeder(Hidden Figures) with a story by Perry.

There have been some interesting takes on animated toy bears in recent years. There’s, of course, the one-two punch ofPaddington, and the two-for-the-show R-rated adventures ofTed. In the Pooh family, there’s the relatively recent 2011 animated and G-rated reboot ofWinnie the Poohand the more-recent-than-that 2017 taleGoodbye Christopher Robin. Disney’s new take,Christopher Robin, sees the title character all grown up and possibly hallucinating that his childhood pal–and literary co-creation of his father–has come to life. I’m not sold on this design of Pooh, nor the decision to film it like it’s some sort of documentary, but it is what it is. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
