The Cinema Audio Society announced the full list of nominees for its 58th annual awards ceremony for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. This year’s show will feature seven categories honoring the movies, TV shows, documentaries, and variety specials that stood out in regard to sound design along with ten software nominees for Outstanding Product. Awards will be presented on March 19 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown and will be hosted byCriminal MindsstarKirsten Vangsness.
Live-action nominees to be judged by sound mixers include blockbustersDune,Spider-Man: No Way Home,No Time to Die,The Power of the Dog, andWest Side Story, all of which are strong contenders for the Oscars and shortlisted for Best Sound. In animation, Disney’s smash hitEncanto, which has had songscharting on the Billboard Hot 100for some time now, leads a field that also featuresRaya and the Last Dragon,Luca,Sing 2, andThe Mitchells vs. The Machines. Other categories up for grabs include documentaries, non-theatrical motion pictures or limited series, one hour television series, half-hour television series, and a variety category with entries such asBo Burnham’sInsideandBilly Eilish:The World’s a Little Blurry.
This year’s event marks a return to normality for the CAS Awards after last year’s was forced to go virtual due to the pandemic. The CAS announced a few special awards for the ceremony as well.Sir Ridley Scottwas previously slated to receive the Cinema Audio Society Filmmaker Award while re-recording mixerPaul Massey, who is also twice nominated for the normal awards, will be honored with a CAS Career Achievement Award. Also presented during the awards is theCAS Student Recognition Awardwhich honors aspiring young sound designers with a $5,000 prize.

“This year’s nominees display incredible skill and craftsmanship,” saidKarol Urban, the president of the CAS. “We received submissions reflecting a myriad of narrative styles and technical approaches. The ingenuity and storytelling expertise of our sound mixing community is truly spectacular.” Per their mission, the CAS Awards are meant to shine a light on the people behind the curtain that assure everything sounds as creative and artistic as the visuals on screen.
