As far as hopes for breaking the formula that has kept most Marvel movies entertaining but finally a little too overproduced and flimsy, all eyes are currently on two productions:Doctor StrangeandBlack Panther. WherePantherhasRyan Coogler, the talented filmmaker behindCreedandFruitvale Station,Doctor StrangehasScott Derrickson, the director behind the terrifyingSinister, as well as a more mystical storyline and a fantastic cast. One of the members of that very cast, the greatMads Mikkelsen, who plays the main villain in the film, went on the record today withYahoo UK Moviesabout why the film will be different, yet familiar, for Marvel fans.
Here’s what Mikkelsen told Yahoo:
“If you look at the comic books, the comic books are quite different [to other Marvel stories]. I think that the film will be different from the other [Marvel] films that we’ve seen, but not as different as the books are, because that was basically the ‘60s and ‘70s – it was more like an acid trip"
This all seems pretty obvious. Several Marvel storylines have tangled with mysticism, but usually its in reference to a villain of some sort, whereasDoctor Strangetakes a deep dive into the world of mysticism on several levels, and the footage that has been seen from the film underlines the “acid trip” feel of the material that has been carried over to the film. The actor went onto say:
“We’ve taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today…So you still have the energy, you still have the colours, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. I think that was a necessity – if not, you would just make a crazy film. But you still have it there – you have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavour, that’s for sure.”
This is all very heartening, if not exactly surprising. The trailer for the film had already essentially quelled any worry that this darker property would be executed with the same brazen efficiency and action-film zip as something likeCaptain America: Civil War. Still, it’s nice to hear the actor talk so confidently about whyDoctor Strangewill be different from its incredibly similar ilk, and puts even more anticipation on a film that was already one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2016.
Marvel’sDoctor Strangewill be released in theaters nationwide on November 6th.
