We’re just a few weeks away from the release of a brand new Marvel Studios movie, and Marvel is now offering a taste of Oscar-winning composerMichael Giacchino’s score for the dimension-shiftingDoctor Strange. Directed byScott Derrickson, the film starsBenedict Cumberbatchas Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in an auto-accident, after which he travels to Tibet in search of a cure. There, he crosses paths withTilda Swinton’s The Ancient One, who trains him in the ways of the mystic, revealing alternate dimensions and a looming threat in the form ofMads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius.
Giacchino is certainly one of the most accomplished composers to work on a Marvel film, as the studio has traditionally stuck with a stable of action-heavy composers likeBrian Tyler(Iron Man 3,Thor: The Dark World,Avengers: Age of Ultron),Tyler Bates(Guardians of the Galaxy 1and2), andHenry Jackman(Captain America: The Winter SoldierandCivil War).Joss Whedonmixed things up by settingAlan Silvestri(Back to the Future) to scoreThe Avengers, and while that resulted in arguably the closest thing to an iconic theme Marvel has put together so far, the studio is still searching for a trulygreatoriginal score.

And that could be the case with Giacchino. The guy’s work ranges fromStar TrektoLosttoUpandThe Incredibles, and in this clip from the end credits, we can hear a significant departure from anything Marvel has done thus far. Giacchino’s score here is very heavily influenced by psychedelic rock from the 70s and 80s, which is in keeping with the visual tone of the film and its nod to the artwork ofSteve Ditko. It’s a guitar-heavy track, but also kind of rambly and, well, trippy. This is the first of two scores formassivefilms by Giacchino, with theZootopiacomposer also handling the score forRogue One: A Star Wars Story, so the guy’s closing out 2016 with a bang.
