So much goes into the casting of a character, those involved have no idea, truly, how that casting may be received by the audience at large. This week onDavid Tennant Does a Podcast With…David Tennantand his wifeGeorgia Tennant, also an actress, talked about how he almost didn’t take the job that made him famous. TheDoctor Whoactor reveals that “I had an agent at the time who was like, ‘don’t touch it. It’s not going to work’.” Yes, David Tennant considered saying no to being the Tenth Doctor in the early aughts.

Looking at the greater context, it could make sense in a way. WhenRussell T. Daviesrebooted the franchise in 2005,Christopher Ecclestonleft after only one season of playing the Ninth Doctor and after he left, that meant Davies had to practically start over. If you’re truly worried about there being a timeline out there where he didn’t take the gig, rest assured. “Well, maybe I was clearly going to do it, butthere was definitely a moment where I wasn’t.”

David Tennant Has Played The Doctor Not Once, But Twice

Doctor Whohas passed some major milestones ever since the series was rebooted in 2005. Not only has it now passed 20 years of the reboot, but the show as a whole, which began in 1963, celebrated 50 years in 2013 and 60 years in 2023. For the 60th Anniversary Specials, Tennant was brought back in as the Fourteenth Doctor. As his Doctor tried to figure out why that face returned, it also set the scene forNcuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. The concept of a returning face was not as foreign as some fans who disliked the move might think. During the 50th Anniversary Special,Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor, appeared in a scene as “The Curator.” WhenMatt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor realizes who he is, The Curator offers him a cheeky response. He tells him that as he gets older he’ll find himself revisiting a few old favorite faces. It’s no secret that Tennant, Baker, and Smith, tend to be synonymous with Doctor Who for the general public.
