Emotions will be running high following the series finale ofGame of Thronesthis coming May, but HBO is offering a way to decompress a week later: a look back at the show as a whole. It was announced today that HBO will be airing feature-lengthGame of Thronesdocumentary on May 26th, one week after the series finale of the show. The doc, which is titledGame of Thrones: The Last Watch, was quietly commissioned by the pay cable network and was directed byJeanie Finlay(Seahorse), with showrunnersDavid BenioffandD.B. Weissserving as executive producers.

While the two-hour documentary will delve into how a production likeGame of Thronescomes to fruition, it aims to offer something more substantial than a straightforward “making of” doc:

Made with unprecedented access, GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.

Much more than a “making of” documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world — and then have to say goodbye to it.

It’s nice to know this doc will be airing on HBO. The network reportedly shota huge reunion specialwith all the current and former castmembers during production on Season 8 last year, but that reunion special will only be available to view by buying the complete series Blu-ray set.

As someone who’s watched this show from the beginning, and wholovesinsight into how stuff like this gets made, I’m eager to see whatThe Last Watchhas to offer. At the very least, it’ll giveGame of Thronesfans one last campfire to rally around as the biggest show in HBO history comes to an end.
