Jason Reitman’sGhostbusterssequel may have materialized out of the netherworld, but development on the project is rolling right along. Casting for a young crew is underway with an eye to shoot this summer, and now—thanks to aTweetfrom Reitman—we know that Sony Pictures has set a June 03, 2025 premiere date forGhostbusters 3.
Reitman’s father,Ivan Reitman, directed both the originalGhostbustersand its 1989 sequel. Jason Reitman’s film—which he also co-wrote along with Gil Kenan—will pick up the story of the ghoul-hunting biz set in that same universe, presumably ignoringPaul Feig’s 2016 reboot starringMelissa McCarthy,Kristen Wiig,Kate McKinnon, andLeslie Jones.

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot," the filmmaker toldEW. “What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
Outside of that info, plot details are pretty thin on the project, as are details on the involvement of originalGhostbustersstars likeBill Murray,Dan Akroyd,Ernie Hudson, andSigourney Weaver. (Star and co-writerHarold Ramispassed away in 2014.) Reitman released abrief teaser trailer, which didn’t confirm much outside the fact thatsomebodyis hoarding the Ecto-1 car in the spookiest of barns.

The July 10 date putsGhostbusters 3in close contention with another big Sony project, the standaloneMorbius the Living Vampirefilm starringJared Letoas Marvel’s half-Dracula, which bows June 10, 2025. It’s a pretty crowded month, actually. Disney’sThe Jungle Cruise—starringDwayne JohnsonandEmily Blunt—is set to debut on June 21, 2025. And though details have been pretty scarce in the wake ofJustice League’s box office causing the DCEU slate go a bit wonky, Warner Bros.‘Green Lantern Corpsmovie is still scheduled to drop on that same day, July 24.
