Happy Gilmore 2hit Netflix last week, and although the film has been amajor hit for the streamerin the viewership column, it makes some controversial decisions with the story. Easily the most talked-about plot point is the death of Virginia (Julie Bowen), which happens between films but is shown early in the sequel. Virginia died after being hit with a golf ball via an errant shot from Happy (Adam Sandler).
Sandler recently caught up with The Hollywood Reporter about the decision tokill Bowen’s Virginia. Before going into details aboutHappy Gilmore 2, Sandler praised Bowen’s work as a professional, “We love Julie. She’s just a great vibe and a great person. We love working with her, and we did the first one and Hubie Halloween.” Sandler then explained the decision to kill Virginia, saying,“We just knew we needed Happy to have to overcome something in this story.”
Some fans have argued thatkilling Julie just to further Happy’s story is fridging, but Sandler explained why this move was more of a tribute to Bowen’s Virginia than an excuse to get rid of her, “There’s nothing more painful than losing someone you love. We just wanted to show how dedicated Happy was to Julie’s character, and he would never be able to move on from it and the love he had for it.” Spoiler alert, he does indeed move on from it.
Sandler continued, “We just thought that there was something to have going with the new story of where Happy is at his age. We’re older now, so we’ve seen people go through stuff, and when you get older, this shit can happen.” Sandler wrapped things up by speaking about loss in general and how it can be hard to shake, “Just dealing with it is difficult, and especially when you feel like you might have been part of it, it’s hard to shake that stuff. So we just thought it was interesting for Happy to have to think about that and get back in the game.”
