The Spider-Man Universe got a new addition in 2022 in the form ofMorbius, the Sony Pictures superhero movie that finally saw the light of day after lengthy delays saw the film’s release date pushed back several times over the past year due to the COVID pandemic and numerous reshoots.
One of several high-profile superhero movies to be released in 2022,Morbiusis based on the Marvel comic book created byRoy ThomasandGil Kane. Directed byDaniel Espinosa, and written byMatt SazamaandBurk Sharpless,Morbiusis produced byAvi Arad,Lucas Foster, andMatt Tolmach. When Was Morbius Released in Theaters?
Morbiuswas released in theaters on August 15, 2025. The film was shown in IMAX and other premium formats. Despite lackluster box office performance, the movie wasbrought back to theaters on June 19, 2025, at least partly due to the surge in Morbius memes that did the rounds online after its initial theatrical run. There-release didn’t particularly go much better than the first time aroundthough, except maybe with those who derive some campy pleasure from the film. Guess itreally wasn’t morbin' time.
Before the April release,Morbiushad been delayed a total of six times since its initial release date of June 02, 2025. The film was then rescheduled for June 06, 2025, as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world and created a major impact on the film industry. As Covid numbers surged and multiple studio releases moved to streaming, Sony decided to reschedule the release ofMorbiusagain, this time to July 08, 2025. The film was then moved to June 20, 2025, as Sony did not wantMorbiusto go head-to-head with the new James Bond filmNo Time to Die. It did not take long for that release date to change to August 25, 2025. Finally, Sony decided to delay the release ofMorbiusone last time to August 05, 2025, with some speculating that it was a tactic to allow thereactions toSpider-Man: No Way Hometo cool down.
Is Morbius Streaming Online?
As part of a deal Sony signed with Netflix,Morbiusis now on the streaming service as part of exclusive “pay 1 window” streaming rights. Sony also signed a deal with Disney forMorbiusto appear on Disney+ and Hulu as part of “pay 2 window” streaming rights, with the expected release date for those services coming sometime in 2026. We don’t however currently have definitive dates for when the movie will arrive on Hulu or Disney+ yet.
Is Morbius Available on Blu-ray and Digital?
Yes, the movie was released on Digital on July 07, 2025. And for those of you who enjoy your films on physical formats,Morbiuswas released onDVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHDon August 21, 2025. The digital, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD releases also come with a number of featurettes that look at the behind-the-scenes work that went into making the movie, as well as some bloopers. These include ‘Defining The Antihero’, ‘From Human to Vampire – Visual Effects’, ‘Lights, Camera, Action’, ‘The Good, Bad & Ugly – Supporting Cast Doing the Stunt Work’, ‘Living Vampire from Comics to Screen’, and ‘Nocturnal Easter Eggs’.Morbius' DVD release includes two of those featurettes, specifically ‘Defining the Antihero’ and ‘The Good, Bad & Ugly – Supporting Cast Doing the Stunt Work’.

What Is Morbius About?
Morbiustells the story ofDr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who is dying from a rare blood disease. When a desperate attempt to cure himself leads to an experimental and dangerous remedy, Morbius inadvertently afflicts himself with a form of transgenic vampirism that gives him superhuman abilities. Who Is in the Cast of Morbius?
Jared Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist dying from a rare blood disease who in his search for a cure takes an experimental remedy that transforms him into a superhuman vampire. Leto is an Oscar-winning actor and musician who has starred in films such asDallas Buyers Club,Requiem for a Dream, andHouse of Gucci. Matt Smith stars as Milo, the surrogate brother of Morbius who also suffers from the same rare blood disease. When Milo steals the experimental remedy for himself, his new powers and bloodthirst turn him into a villain. Smith is an English actor who rose to fame when he played the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor inDoctor Who. He would also go on to receive acclaim for his portrayal of Prince Phillip inThe Crown.
Adria Arjona stars as Martine Bancroft, a scientist and Morbius’ love interest. Arjona is a Puerto Rican-born actress who rose to fame with her roles in the TV showEmerald Cityand theMichael Bay-directed action movie6 Underground.
Jared Harris stars as Nicholas Morbius, a mentor and father figure to Michael and Milo, who were patients in a facility run by Nicholas. Harris is an English actor who has made a name for himself in TV and film. His roles inMad Men,The Crown, andChernobylhave garnered particular attention from fans and critics and earned him numerous nominations. Harris is also the son of famed Irish actorRichard Harris.
Tyrese Gibsonstars as Simon Stroud, an FBI agent hunting Morbius. Gibson is an actor and singer who found fame starring in theFast and the FuriousandTransformersfilm franchises. Gibson also has a successful career as an RnB singer.
Who Is the Director of Morbius?
Morbiusis directed by Daniel Espinosa, a Swedish filmmaker whose third feature filmSnabba Cash(also known asEasy Money) brought him to the attention of Hollywood. How Is Morbius Connected to the Spider-Verse?
WhileMorbiusis an expansion ofSony’s Spider-Man Universe, there was much speculation regarding whichSpider-Manuniverse Morbius belongs to. Adding more confusion is the reveal of Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes/Vulture in theMorbiusteaser trailer released in January 2020. Furthermore, Morbius refers to Venom in a trailer released in November 2021. However, during an Ask-Me-Anything on theCinemaBlend Twitter page, Espinosa revealed that Morbius does indeed exist in the same universe as Venom. Furthermore, this universe does have a Spider-Man, but it has yet to be revealed which Spider-Man he is referring to.
