More times than not, you’ll hear plenty of qualms from those who have read a popular book or series that has been adapted for the screen. Fandoms like those behindThe Hunger GamesandGame of Thronesare quick to point out the glaring differences that shifted from page to production. But there’s one following that loves the retelling so much they’ve donated their own dollars to its future. That would be those addicted to Prime Video’s Biblical series,The Chosen, whom creator, director, and co-scribe,Dallas Jenkins, refers to as “co-creators.”

While chipping away at thesixth season of the uber-popular series, Jenkins chatted with the Deseret News about the overwhelming response from the fan base, which he credits with getting the title on its feet. When Jenkins’ journey withThe Chosenbegan, he admitted, “I didn’t know that there would beanyfans,” but we now know that to be the least of his worries. Instead, those who have tuned in season after season and dropped their hard-earned cash on theatrical screenings are hungry to know when Season 6 will arrive. For the most part, the project is a crowd-funded production, with Jenkins explaining:

“The fans have always been co-creators of the show. We’re a free show. The majority of our income is generated by donations, by fans choosing to give in some way to the show.”

‘The Chosen’s Dallas Jenkins on Paying It Back

In an effort to say thank you to those who have helpedThe Chosennot just survive but thrive, Jenkins implemented the opportunity for those who have donated money to appear as unpaid extras. Folks travel from all over the world to be part of the massive sets in Texas and Utah, purchasing their own plane tickets, lodging, and costumes to see how the sausage is made. This, to Jenkins, allows him to show his gratitude for thenever-ending support, as he added:

“We thought, ‘Well, the fans would love to be here. They’re willing to support the show. Maybe in exchange for their donation, we could give them an opportunity to be here’… I’ve always considered it to be a partnership. When they’re here on set, it’s even more so because they’re literally part of the scene… That’s deepened my relationship with the fans. And I think them being here and seeing how hard everyone works to justify their faith in the project deepens their passion as well.”
