Earlier this year, worlds collided when the degenerates ofIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiainvaded the more wholesome environs ofAbbott Elementary. This summer, the tables will be turned, as Abbott’s faculty heads to Paddy’s Pub. But who will stay above the fray, and who will take advantage ofAlways Sunny’s more R-rated milieu?Janelle James, who plays Abbott principal and queen bee Ava Coleman, saysviewers might be surprised. She made the comments on a recent episode of Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast.
Although one might expect the extroverted Ava to be a key participant in the kind of depravity theAlways Sunnycrew usually gets up to,James reveals that she takes more on a supervisory role:“Ava is kind of the ringmaster in that episode, so I’m more of a narrator for all the hijinks in that episode. I think everybody expects Ava to go over there and act the fool, but it’s really the characters that are in Abbott that are more low-key, that are turning it up.It’s more surprising than you would think.” Who will stoop to the levels of Philadelphia’s worst bar? You’ll have to find out for yourself whenIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiapremieres its seventeenth season on July 9 on FX.

Who Is Ava Coleman?
Vain, materialistic, and constantly pursuing multiple side hustles, Ava Coleman became principal of the underfunded inner-city Willard R. Abbott Elementary School via blackmail, when she caught the school superintendent cheating on his wife. Although she initially didn’t take her job seriously and treated her teachers with contempt, she eventually came to appreciate the difficulty and importance of their jobs, and began to act in the school’s best interests. In Season 4, she turned to blackmail again, as she extorted a local golf course into providing the school with much-needed new equipment. When the district discovered her actions, shetook the blame for everything and was fired, but her staff fought for her eventual reinstatement. Another complication entered her life in Season 4, as her long-estranged father (Keith David) tried to make contact with her. She has also recently pursued a relationship with district IT representativeO’Shon(Matthew Law).
The first half of the crossover, theAbbott Elementaryepisode “Volunteers,” featured the Paddy’s Pub crew signing up to volunteer at Abbott for their court-mandated community service. Hilarity ensues, as Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) teach Charlie (Charlie Day) to read, Dee (Kaitlin Olson) tries to steal Gregory (Tyler James Williams) from Janine (Quinta Brunson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) gets snared in a raccoon trap while trying to eat the school’s delicious compost.
