For the last two years,Todd Phillipshas been pretty excited about the sequel to his critically acclaimedJoaquin Phoenix-ledJoker, and his social media feed backs that up! Keeping up with his ways, in his new holiday post, the writer-director has given fans a new look at Arthur Fleck in Arkham Asylum—which is likely where he’ll fall in love with his psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), setting the stage forJoker: Folie à Deux. While the first image in the post gives us a peek at Arthur Fleck locked behind bars, the second image sets a very different tone, with Gaga’s Harley Quinn looking adoringly at the Joker. Although the exact plot details have been kept under wraps, the second installment of Phillips’Jokeris expected to traditionally follow the duo’s romance and cruel partnership.

As it has been previously confirmed, Phoenix’s Joker won’t be linked toRobert Pattinson’s Batman—or any ofJames Gunn’s new slate of DC films on the horizon. Phillips has been very straightforward about his film not being directly connected to the former DC Extended Universe or the newly minted DC Universe, and at one point,he even wanted to start a label called DC Blackwhich would have allowed different directors to create very different adaptations of DC characters, without the need for the films to be connected. While that never officially became a thing, theJokerfranchise has successfully allowed audiences to learn more about the notorious villain, which has previously been played byJack Nicholson,Heath Ledger, andJared Leto, without being connected to a larger universe.
