Band breakups have never been a gentle process for anyone involved. Over the years, the music industry has witnessed some of the biggest and messiest splits, each for different reasons. That includes bands likeOasis,Fleetwood Mac,Sex Pistols,Pink Floyd,Guns N’ Roses, and perhaps the biggest in history,The Beatles. But what happens when the band is made up of your own siblings? TheJonas Brothers(consisting ofJoe,Nick, andKevin Jonas) rose to fame almost immediately after their debut. However, despite their rapid career at the time, they took a hiatus to focus on their solo endeavors. More than a decade after their brief breakup in 2013, the band has managed to reunite and find success once again. But what do they really feel about how things unfolded all those years ago?

The Jonas Brothers' Breakup in 2013 “Needed To Happen”

In a clip from an episode of Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals (viaBillboard), the trio was asked whether they still feel any lingering “guilt” over their temporary breakup in 2013. Nick, who admitted in 2019 that he was the reason behind the Jonas Brothers' six-year hiatus, said he doesn’t feel much guilt, though he believes he could have communicated things more maturely at the time. “Not guilt so much as, in reflection, I can definitely see how I could have more lovingly communicated something that needed to be said. It’s often how we say things that matter more than what we’re saying. I think we all knew … it had run its course. I just didn’t know how to maturely articulate that and lovingly do that.”

Joe jokingly responded, “I’m glad you brought it up.” He then echoed Nick’s earlier sentiment, saying, “I think it needed to happen, and I think we all grew from that experience so much… We were having such a difficult time just being real with each other back then… And now it’s like we can communicate way better because we’re able to be like, ‘All right, we don’t need to be scared to have tough conversations.'” Kevin added: “We’re brothers first. I know that’s a little cliché to say, but we truly are.”

Nick Jonas Triggered the Jonas Brothers’ Split and Played a Key Role in Their Reunion

Before officially confirming their split in October 2013, the trio had already begun showing signs of drifting apart, notably by canceling the remaining dates of their tour. An insider toldPEOPLEat the time: “They are each looking into solo projects. Nick and the Administration are working on another album. They are moving forward away from the Jonas Brothers. I think this is the beginning of the end.” The source also noted that the band members were “not getting along at all.” Six years later, after spending those years focusing on their respective endeavors, the Jonas Brothers surprised fans with their official return as a band, releasing the single “Sucker.” The hit track served as the lead single from their fifth studio album,Happiness Begins— their first studio album since 2009’sLines, Vines and Trying Times.

During their appearance onThe Late Late Show with James Cordenin the Carpool Karaoke segment — where they sang along to earlier hits like “Burnin’ Up,” “Lovebug,” and “When You Look Me in the Eyes” — Nick openly admitted to Corden that he was indeed the reason behind the band’s split. “I broke the band up, but I got it back together,” said Nick, to which Kevin responded, “It’s true. It’s a full redemptive story.”
