20th Century Fox has released the firstMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenimages online. The film starsAsa Butterfieldas a teenager dealing with tragedy and nightmares, and on the advice of his therapist visits his grandmother’s old home only to find that it’s an orphanage for children with unusual powers.Eva Greenco-stars as the eponymous Miss Peregrine, “a shape-shifter known as an ymbryne,” who protects the children from monsters known as “hollows” (so I guess we’re in for a movie where everything has its own lingo).
DirectorTim BurtontellsEWthat Peregrine is like a “scary Mary Poppins”, so it should be a delight to see what she does with the role. WhileDark Shadowswasn’t a particularly good film, she was a lot of fun in it, and there’s definitely room for her to do the same withMiss Peregrine.

The movie also has romance subplot involving Jake (Butterfield) and Emma (Ella Purnell), “who, in an earlier life, also had a special bond with Jake’s grandfather.” That’s…a little weird, and not in a Tim-Burton-everything-is-spiral-stair-cases-and-stripes kind of way.
The orphanage’s other charges include “Olive (Lauren McCrostie), Bronwyn (Pixie Davies), Millard (Cameron King), and the twins (Thomas and Joseph Odwell).” Burton describes them as an “odd family,” and it will be interesting to see ifBig Eyesrecharged the director to do something different and unexpected, or if he’s going to slump back to the level ofDark ShadowsandAlice in Wonderland.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenopens September 30th. Check out images from the film below via EW andEmpire.
