CBS has made an early move by giving a series order toSheriff Country, a spin-off of the popular dramaFire Country. The network plans to debut the new series during the 2025-2026 TV season, extending the narrative universe of first responders to a new corner of storytelling. The genesis ofSheriff Countrystemmed from a backdoor pilot featured in theFire Countryepisode titled “Alert the Sheriff,” which aired on April 12. Morena Baccarin(Homeland) leads the cast as Sheriff Mickey Fox, whose character is intrinsically linked toFire Country’sCal Fire division chief Sharon Leone, portrayed byDiane Farr....

The New York Film Critics Circle has announced its awards for 2017. While they’re hardly the only critics group on the circuit, they’re arguably the most influential/notable one. They have a history of singling out somewhat underrated/shadowed performances and films that get a visibility boost in the race, sometimes leading to an Oscar nomination (see:Isabelle HuppertforEllelast year). HBO’s hotly-anticipated video game adaptationThe Last of Ushas been announced to be starting production this coming July in Calgary, as per the Director’s Guild of Canada (viaCBC). It’s going to be a long shoot, too. Cameras are set to start rolling on July 5 of this year and are scheduled to wrap almost a year later on August 14, 2025. That’s a lengthy schedule for an episodic TV series and just goes to show that HBO is pulling out all of the stops to ensure thatThe Last of Uswill be appointment viewing when it eventually premieres —which might not be until mid-2023 based on that filming schedule....
