CBS Films has released a new trailer forPatriots Day, directorPeter Berg’s (Deepwater Horizon) dramatic chronicle of the Boston marathon bombing and its aftermath.Mark Wahlbergstars as Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders who joins survivors, first responders, and investigators in the hunt for the terrorists responsible for the act before they strike again.
Berg has certainly doubled down on making true-life “American hero” events his specialty, as he tackled the military inLone Survivor, and just a few months ago released the oil rig disaster dramaDeepwater Horizon(also with Wahlberg). It almost feels like a natural trajectory given that Berg perfected the “handheld camera adds reality” technique withFriday Night Lightsand the subsequent TV series, and inPatriots DayBerg appears to be chronicling nationalism on a broader scale. The addition ofTrent ReznorandAtticus Rossas the film’s composers certainly set it apart from many other true-life dramas, and while this trailer is very heavy on the nationalism, I’m interested to see what insights Berg gleans from the full film itself.

Here’s the official synopsis forPatriots Day:
In the aftermath of an unspeakable act of terror, Police Sergeant TOMMY SAUNDERS (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent RICHARD DESLAURIERS (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner ED DAVIS (John Goodman), Sergeant JEFFREY PUGLIESE (J.K. Simmons) and nurse CAROL SAUNDERS (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and the strength of the people of Boston.
