The end is officially nigh for AMC’sPreacher, the hyper-violent slice of carnage and Catholicism created bySeth RogenandEvan Golberg, based on the Vertigo comic book series from writerGarth Ennisand artistSteve Dillon. Rogen announced the series would return for season 4 on August 4th, but also that the next go-around would bePreacher’s last.

The series starsDominic Cooperas Jesse Custer, a small-town holy man who becomes possessed by the angel-demon offspring, Genesis. Together with his vampire buddy Cassidy (Joe Gilgun) and ex-criminal/girlfriend Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga), Jesse embarks on a journey to find God, who has more than a few atrocities to answer for. There’s also a character named Arseface. His face, as you’re able to imagine, resembles an arse.

The show is pretty wild, which is in keeping with the comic book series' love for violence, fire, and just your good old-fashioned blasphemy. When we spoke to Cooper at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the actor gave a pretty accurate summary ofPreacher’s tone:

“[W]hat I think we’ve been finding out more and more is, it’s never extreme enough. And the further you go with this stuff, the better, the more dangerous, and the more risks you take. Then it’s more funny. Then it’s more shocking. Then it’s more … It’s just each and every step you take, you can go as far as you possibly think you can go. And I think that that’s kind of always been the mantra from the writers’ room to the fight sequences to every aspect of it. And the more we do that, the more successful it is.”
