The firstTransformersmovie is making a surprise comeback on streaming.Josh DuhamelandShia LaBeouf’s 2007 action-packed blockbuster hasclimbed back into the Top 10 charts on Disney+ andParamount+in several countries, perFlixPatrol. This was the film that kicked offMichael Bay’s wild, explosion-filled franchise and introduced a whole new generation toAutobots and Decepticons.
Critics were lukewarm towards the film upon its release, reflected in its 57% score onRotten Tomatoes. But audiences have always embraced theTransformersfilms, and this one holds a strong 85% audience score. Last week,Bay’sTransformersmovies landed on Disney+ in select regions, and it looks like nostalgia is bringing them back into the spotlight. Streaming is full of big action franchises, but not many bring thekind of chaos and funthatTransformersdoes. TheDisney+ lineup mostly sticks to Marvel andStar Wars, and those are great, but they come with homework. Viewers usually have to catch up on 20 other movies and spin-off series just to understand what’s going on.Transformers, however, is a rather simple franchise. Giant robots land on Earth, stuff explodes, and LaBeouf screams a lot. The movie doesn’t waste time trying to be deep or complicated. It’sloud, flashy, and proud of it. And even though it came out in 2007,the CGI inTransformersstill holds upand looks better than most modern blockbusters.

Moreover,Transformersis an IPthat continues to hold audience interest over the years. Most of the films in the franchise have been box office hits. Just last year,Transformers: Onebecame one of the biggest critical successes of 2024, earning an89% score from critics and a near-perfect 97% audience ratingonRotten Tomatoes. On the other hand,Electric Statetried to tell a new robo-human story earlier this year but didn’t do as well on streaming despite being developed against a $320 million budget. Per the critics, despite having a similar theme, itlacked the energy and crowd-pleasing formula that makesTransformersso successful. So it’s not too surprising that people are going back to what works.

Paramount has since tried spin-offs and animated takes, but none have matched the success of Bay’s earlier films.
