If there is anything that the co-creator of the universally popularSherlockseries should be good at, it’s writing a British detective story. Following on from his work on Sherlock andDoctor Who, and following his acting appearances in bothMission: Impossible - The Final ReckoningandThe Fantastic Four: First Steps,Mark Gatiss' latest writing project, the cozy crime storyBookish, has already beenrenewed for a second season.
Recently, it was rumored that filming on said second season would begin this summer, following the airing of Season 1 in mid-July. That now seems all the more likely, following confirmation viaInstagramof the recent read-through of theBookishSeason 2 scripts. What’s more, the caption on the post seems to confirm a first taste of when the second season will arrive, saying, “Today, we had a read through of the brilliant scripts for Bookish Series 2! Roll on 2026.” For those yet to checkBookishout, here’s a look at the synopsis for the series:

“Gabriel Book, proprietor of an antiquarian bookshop, relies on his vast collection to unravel baffling cases; he nurtures a group of lovable yet troubled individuals, providing informal protection and guidance.”
‘Bookish’ Has Been a Huge Hit
Sporting a perfect 100% critics' rating on review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes,Bookishhas received plenty of praise since its recent arrival. Awarding it 4/5 stars,Radio TimescriticJames Hibbssaid, “Bookish is supremely watchable and provides us with a brilliant new TV detective, some craftily constructed puzzles and a fascinating look at post-war London,” before adding, “Here’s hoping, should Gatiss be interested in the long haul, there will be many more seasons to come. This really does feel like a series that could run and run.”
The series stars Gatiss alongside an eye-catching cast, including the likes ofBridgerton’sPolly Walker,Connor Finchas Book’s assistant Jack,Elliot Leveyas Inspector Bliss,Blake Harrisonas Sergeant Morris,Joely Richardson,Daniel Mays, and former Time LordPaul McGann. Speaking about the second season renewal, Gatiss said in a statement, “I’m thrilled that the team at U&Alibi are allowing me to dive back into the world ofBookishand create more fiendish crimes for Gabriel Book and the team to solve.” He continued, “I can’t wait for viewers to immerse themselves in the world we’ve created when the first series airs in a few months’ time.”
