Of all the strange things that have occurred in our existence, it’s easy to overlook the realization that we got aSonic the Hedgehogmovie that was both above average for video game adaptations and also didn’t make Sonic look like a mid 00s homunculus. It’s a movie that was playfully respectful to its source material while also being a fun time for kids and madcapJim Carreyfans everywhere, and its sequel, complexly titledSonic the Hedgehog 2, doubles down on that immensely in its third act.
With a third movie in development, and a television spin-off featuring Knuckles (Idris Elba) coming to Paramount+, let’s talk about what happens at the end ofSonic the Hedgehog 2.

When you think aboutSonic the Hedgehog 2more than you need to, it feels like you’re watching two different movies at the same time. On one hand you have your typical sequel setup for a Sonic movie, with Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik (Carrey) returning to Earth with new baddie Knuckles the Echidna (Elbain full meathead mode) to get revenge on Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and obtain the mysterious power of the Master Emerald. On the other hand, however, you have this out-of-place subplot with Tom Wachowski (notable CGI pet ownerJames Marsden) in his sister-in-law’s (Natasha Rothwell) wedding that’s about as much franchise foreshadowing as it is a randomTrue Liesremake. It’s a weird viewing experience, which is kinda fitting for a Sonic movie in its own way.
The two storylines collide when Sonic and his new friend/fanboy Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) ring teleport to Tom to escape from Eggman’s Portal robots, only for the three to be captured by Commander Walters (Tom Butler) and his agents from the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.). They’re saved by Tom’s wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter) before Robotnik and Knuckles find a temple that contains the emerald, leading Sonic to recreate theFrozen 2trailer by running across the ocean to get to them. What follows is another brawl between the red and blue furries, giving Robitnik the moment to take the emerald for himself to take over the world with giant robots and Pantera music.

After Sonic and Knuckles find some common ground and team up, they’re picked up by Tails in his signature red biplane to put an end to Eggman’s mech and his wacky dancing. Our main human and non-human characters finally arrive at Green Hills to figure out a way to reclaim the emerald from Eggman. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles struggle to find a way to penetrate Eggman’s mech at first until they decide to split up and trick the mech to shatter itself, splitting the Master Emerald back into the seven Chaos Emeralds. It should be noted that throughout this sequence, Sonic refers himself as the “groin” in Eggman’s weak spot, giving fans closure with knowing that the 90s icon sees himself as, in fact, a dick. Tom and Maddie are able to save Sonic from being destroyed, that is before Eggman tries to stomp the three to oblivion. Right when this happens, the emeralds immediately enter Sonic’s body, transforming him into Super Sonic, who’s kinda like Goku but a million times cooler.
The yellow godly fuzzball quickly puts an end to Eggman’s mech before reverting back to normal, as the mustached madman falls to certain doom. Knuckles is able to form the emeralds back together and he, Sonic, and Tails agree to safeguard it together from any future threats. The Wachowskis welcome Tails and Knuckles to their home, and they all live happily ever after as the town’s strangest looking family, at least for a while until Shadow the Hedgehog, who’s seen in the mid-credits scene, makes his presence known.
