Sony has released the firstSpider-Man: Far From Hometrailer. The upcoming sequel toSpider-Man: Homecominghas Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his friends headed to Europe on a school trip, but Peter’s fun becomes disrupted when elemental creatures start terrorizing various European locales. Recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to step up and fight these things, Peter starts wishing he could just go back and be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man again.

This trailer looks exactly like a sequel toSpider-Man: Homecoming. It’s cute and fun, and I love the idea of sending the kids on a European vacation. Adding Nick Fury to the mix also increases the stakes from an MCU standpoint, and I like thatJake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio is onlybrieflyrevealed in mysterious fashion (he’s totally a bad guy pretending to be a good guy right?). It looks fun! But I’m not sure Sony Pictures anticipated thatFar from Homewould be judged so closely toSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is an unfair comparison given that they’re very different films, but still, it’s hard to shake the fact thatFar from Homefeels the tiniest bit less special in the wake of that animated masterwork. Regardless,Far from Homelooks to be a very fun ride and I’m curious to see what surprises are in store.
