Suggesting that a sad, extremely vocalminority of idiotson the internet don’t actually matter in the slightest,Captain Marvelhas blasted off to a $153 million debut domestically. Worldwide, the film—directed byAnna BodenandRyan Fleck—is downright eaving the stratosphere, adding another $302 million for a global total $455 million. This marks the second highest global opening for a superhero film behindAvengers: Infinity Warand the highest ever for a female-fronted film. (Beating out the previous record holder,Beauty and the Beast.)
With the budget for theBrie Larson-starring film sitting around $150 million, the film’s opening numbers are just the latest success story for the Disney-owned MCU, which has only had two films—Ant-ManandAnt-Man & The Wasp—open under $100,000 since 2015. It’s one of the most fascinating and slightly overwhelming stories in Hollywood history, as even among constant talk of “superhero fatigue” there really is no sign of Kevin Feige’s money train slowing down, especially withAvengers: Endgamelooming on the horizon ready to smash records. With its $153 million haul,Captain Marvellanded on the seventh besting domestic opening in the franchise’s 21-movie history, behind the threeAvengersfilms,Captain America: Civil War,Black Panther, andIron Man 3.

Meanwhile, in non-Marvel talk,How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden Worldswooped into the second place slot in its third weekend with $14.6 million. Rounding out the top 3 isTyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, which nabbed another $12 million. The gorgeous documentaryApollo 11expanded into 405 theaters and managed to land in the top 10, taking in another $1.3 million.
The Kid, a western directed byVincent D’Onofrio, also opened this weekend in 268 theaters for a domestic total of $505,000. The low-key film also stars names likeChris Pratt,Ethan Hawke, andDane DeHaan.
